An Old and Outdated Computer Control Replaced With a New PLC and Touch Screen

Picture of Winding Machine BEFORE new control panel.                                           Picture of Winding Machine AFTER new control panel.

Above is an old German SCHLEICH Winding Machine WM18-CEVP used to wind AC motor coils. The old WM18 control used a Rack of electronic cards for inputs, outputs, video and memory. Since the machine was over 30 years old, the cards were no longer available and when the video card blew, the machine was useless. We replaced the controls with a PLC, Drive, Touch Screen, Potentiometers and Push Buttons. The Winding Machine works better, is more user friendly and is more reliable than before.

PLC Replacement and Programming

The picture on the left was an old OMRON C20 PLC, the PLC was defective and needed to be replaced with a new one. The picture on the right shows the new PLC, for this application we used a Unitronics M91 which is a reliable PLC with a user friendly HMI (Human Machine Interface). The advantage of the new PLC is that you can have multiple timers and easily change them with the touchpad. It took 3 days to take out the old PLC, put in the new one and program it.

Machine Control Box

The 2 pictures above are of a rebuilt control for an industrial grinder. The box controls a spindle motor, a hydraulic pump motor, a water pump motor and a mechanically interlocked vertical adjustment motor. The controls are very simple, start/stop for the spindle, hydraulic and water motors that hold when start is pressed and the vertical adjustment motor turns in one direction for up and the opposite direction for down and this is done through the mechanically interlocked contactor.
